  2. Understand reproduceable techniques to avoid common problems

  3. Improve partial denture design planning

Objectives
  1. To improve confidence and standard of impression taking and bite registration in complete and partial dentures

  2. To enable delegates to use enhanced skills and clinical tips in the provision of complete and partial dentures, and their ability to ‘troubleshoot’ problems

  3. To improve the ability to identify difficult cases and manage patients with unrealistic expectations

Learning content

A lecture-based course with videos and group design breakout sessions to enable delegates to better understand the combination of good patient management and reproducible techniques in the provision of successful dentures.

The CPD in this course meets the criteria for the GDC’s development outcomes A and C

Topics of discussion
  • Consent and spotting red flags

  • Understanding anatomy and controlling the controllables

  • Primary impression techniques

  • Designing special trays. Do I need to border mould?

  • Simplifying your registration blocks

  • Why is the OVD of the old dentures so important?

  • Understanding the importance of lower tooth position - not all dentures should be set up in class 1

  • Important check points at trial insertion and designing a post dam

  • The use of pressure indication paste at the insertion stage to maximise upper denture retention

  2. To discuss considerations in selection of appropriate denture components

  3. Recognise when tooth modifications may be appropriate in partial denture construction

  4. To work through partially edentulous cases and discuss potential designs for tooth replacement with a partial denture

Learning content

A lecture-based course enabling delegates to better understand the combination of good patient management and reproducible techniques in the provision of successful partial dentures.

The CPD in this course meets the criteria for the GDC’s development outcomes A and C

Topics of discussion
  • Patient assessment and denture history

  • Intra & extra-oral examination of the partially dentate patient

  • Ridge & Kennedy Classifications and relevance to clinical practice

  • Occlusal considerations – confirmation vs re-organisation

  • Material choice: Acrylic vs Cobalt Chrome

  • Primary impressions – alginate vs silicone vs polyether

  • Special tray design for bounded saddles and free-end saddles

  • Surveying, Design Principles and Tooth Modifications prior to secondary impressions

  • Secondary impressions for partially dentate patients

  • Jaw registration – how to record ICP and how to record at an increased vertical dimension

  • Try-in – When to do tooth position try-in before metal framework try-in

  • Fit of partial dentures and troubleshooting

Costs & payment
